After the Green Lantern was released, a lot of people are saying that the comic book movie is finally done and can't be profitable anymore. What is funny about this claim is that every site, blog, whatever, they all look to the year The Dark Knight was released.
While this is a justified comparison, not all comic book movies are like The Dark Knight. Thor isn't a crime drama. X-Men: First Class can't be that realistic as it has mutants. And Green Lantern is a movie about space police. If you are looking at just money, then yes these movies haven't been as successful. Thor is only slightly less profitable than Iron Man 2. But Thor and Green Lantern aren't the super hero movies with normal people. They have a lot of high concepts that the average movie goer doesn't want to think about. Iron Man 2 has a guy in an suit who use to be an alcoholic. Thor is a god with a lot of back story and mythos behind him. Green Lantern is the same way.
What makes me still support a lot of super hero movies (besides the fact I'm a fanboy), is that a lot of these movies are critical successes. Thor has 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, and X-Men: First Class has 87% . Yes, Green Lantern has 26%, but it's a genuinely bad film. There are a few of those in every bunch (cough cough CATWOMAN.....cough). But the films have been slowly getting to the point where they are all pretty good.
The real test to see if these movies are burning out audiences will be next summer. We have The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man, and the mother of all movies, The Avengers. And maybe Man of Steel if it gets done in time, but that wont be till December. These are four big name movies with established franchises (The Avengers has been established through the Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies). Spider-Man, Batman, and Superman are big name franchises that will make tons of money no matter what. The Avengers is a spectacle, so that will rake in the money. But to much of a good thing might be.....a good thing. Only time will tell
